Hampton Project

The Hampton Project is a long serving educational charity working with young people in Years 10 and 11 who have committed or are at risk of committing an offence. We provide academic and vocational subjects in a friendly family environment.

Who we are

The Hampton Project is an educational charity which has been located between Balham and Streatham Hill stations for over 30 years.

We work exclusively with YR10 and YR11 young people who have been excluded from mainstream education and who have committed a criminal offence, or those who it is felt may become involved in the criminal / youth justice system.

At present we have 18 places for young people and we offer academic, vocational and social education.

‘The best school I’ve ever been to.’

What we believe

‘The Hampton Project is established to relieve, rehabilitate and educate young people in London who have committed offences or are at risk of offending behaviour, without distinction of gender, race, ethnic origin, sexuality or disability.’

We do not judge our students, we believe in giving them access to a range of GCSE and vocational qualifications along with a youth work programme and opportunities to contribute to the project, enjoy and achieve.

‘The staff are really friendly here.’

What we do

Qualifications on offer

Whether moving on to college or the world of work our students want to achieve the widest range of qualifications possible. We offer Entry level qualifications in English, Maths and IT; and GCSEs in English, Maths, Art and ICT alongside ASDAN bronze and silver awards.

We are unique in offering young people outside mainstream education access to the national curriculum enjoyed by their peers.

Vocational education

In the vocational education workshop, we aim to teach a range of practical skills to enhance the young people’s future training and employment opportunities. We focus primarily on carpentry, furniture making and restoration, picture framing, painting and decorating, and general building maintenance. Health and safety at work is also a major element of the vocational curriculum.

The workshop has great appeal to those young people who are not academically inclined. They are encouraged to design and construct their own furniture to a high standard, as well as to make pieces to commission.

Practical projects are an ideal way to promote young people’s sense of achievement, and to enhance their sense of self confidence and self esteem. These projects also teach the practical application of mathematics, which encourages the students to place a higher value on their overall education.

Youth work / informal education

Our youth work/informal education programme embodies all that learning that takes place outside the confines of the classroom and curriculum.

The programme aims to target the specific needs of our young people. We address the five risk behaviours which impact the most on the lives of our students: youth crime, substance misuse, risky sexual behaviour leading to unintended pregnancy, STDs and HIV/AIDS, emotional problems and school failure leading to truancy and exclusion.

We will strive to promote high self esteem in our students, the motivation to take responsibility for their lives, the development of a positive life view and the social skills necessary to achieve success.

‘The lessons were really useful in getting me into college.’
